06-Feb-06 | Red lights, big city . . . Just four families run vice ring in capital |
Irish Independent Paul Melia |
|
Major crackdown on organised prostitution in Ireland - Operation Quest. Gardai believe that four families are involved in running prostitution rings in Dublin. Five brothel keepers will come before the courts in the coming months. Loopholes in the law allow people to escape prosecution. Under the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 1993 Gardai can charge a person with organising prostitution for gain; living off immoral earnings or managing or keeping a brothel. Charging for sex is not an offence, although running or owning a brothel is. |

06-Feb-06 | MLA calls for halt to sex trade |
Belfast Telegraph Debra Douglas |
| UUP's south Belfast MLA Dr Esmond Birnie concerned that the growth in the vice trade in the Republic was having a direct effect on Northern Ireland due to the trafficking of foreign girls and women. He said: "In 2003, under international pressure, the Irish authorities were eventually forced into acting against the people-smuggling gangs who had made the Republic of Ireland a major trafficking nexus. "More than 100 people were also arrested in raids on a number of lap-dancing clubs in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Dundalk. Unfortunately, it did not take particularly long before the situation deteriorated. "I will be asking the Irish Government to take immediate measures to halt the trafficking and trade in foreign girls and women." | |||

12-Feb-06 | Internet Pimp |
Sunday Mail Jane Hamilton |
| Millionaire John Dockerty, managing director of Christony Companions, runs a monthly contest on his website offering punters a chance to "win" either two or four hour sessions with one or two of his girls. Customers pay £120 a time for sex. Dockerty has 10 girls in Scotland and 15 in north England. Regarding this, MSP Margo MacDonald said: "The indoor sex industry is the fastest growing because of the internet and mobile phones. "Running a competition to offer these women is degrading." Sunday Mail undercover reporter was offered sex within 90 seconds of visiting one of Dockerty's girls. He later issued a statement saying the escorts were independent and he was not responsible for what occurs during the sessions. | |||
