06-Mar-06 | Our prostitution hell goes on |
Belfast Telegraph Paul Burton |
|
| SDLP councillor Pat McCarthy, a leading campaigner against the problem of prostitution in Belfast said the problem is as bad as ever with used condoms discarded near City Hall. Quoting McCarthy: "The area has been an open-air brothel for years, but now that it's changing with two new hotels due to open there, something needs to be done. "We're spending millions encouraging people to come to Belfast but we can't have tourists coming in and out of their hotel being confronted with this." The PSNI has called for new powers as current legislation which dates back over 150 years does not recognise kerb-crawling as a criminal offence. Ulster Unionist MP Lady Sylvia Hermon has called on the police to use Anti-Social Behaviour Orders - Asbos - against kerb-crawlers. | ||||

07-Mar-06 | City prostitution concerns aired | BBC News
| At a public meeting on March 8, 2006, residents in Belfast's city centre complained of their frustration over street prostitution in the area and that there had been little improvement since concerns were raised in January. Kerb crawling is an offence in everywhere in the UK other than Northern Ireland. The government said that a new law against kerb crawling is a priority but would not be in place for at least a year. In January's public meeting attendees were informed that there were approximately 50 brothels in Belfast. Police said they needed more complaints from the public in order to use other legislation to prosecute. | ||||

Critics claim little thought has been given to the impact on neighbours or the difficulties and costs to evict brothel leaseholders if they are a disruption to the neighbourhood. Current laws allow one prostitute to work out of her home. The article gives further details about the debate.
