The Irish Department of Justice and An Garda Siochana warned in a report on people trafficking that Ireland was at increased risk from criminals in Eastern Europe; Bulgarians, Romanians and Lithuanians are heavily involved in sex trafficking. A trafficked Lithuanian woman could be sold for up to 6,000 euro (£4,100). Most girls are trafficked from Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania and Moldova. Operation Pentameter crackdown on people trafficking resulted in two Chinese nationals being charged in Northern Ireland for sex trafficking.

RTE documentary, Prime Time Investigates to be broadcast May 8, 2006. SEE: http://www.rte.ie/news/2006/0508/primetime.html This article describes the plight of sex trafficking victims. "Anna", a Romanian girl (age 14) trafficked through Paris into Dublin. When she refused to work as a prostitute, she was beaten and threats were made against her younger sister until she complied. She was forced to sell sex for seven months in Dublin hotels, beaten and became pregnant, miscarried and was finally taken into care. Her pimp abducted her from care and she was forced back into prostitution until she escaped. She is now living in Romania and receiving counseling. Operation Hotel and Operation Quest are described (as below). "Lina", a Lithuanian girl was interviewed by reporter Keelin Shanley in Lithuania after giving birth to a child conceived while working as a prostitute in a midlands town. her clients were local people, mostly young guys around 18 - 20 years old. Lina's pimp and his wife kept almost all the money and tried to induce a miscarriage when they discovered she was pregnant. Lina escaped and returned to Lithuania. "Maria", a Romanian girl came to Ireland to work in a restaurant but was beaten and put to work in a brothel in Herbert Park Lane, Ballsbridge, in an apartment owned by an Irish criminal. The brothel was owned by a man who had been convicted in 2003 for running a brothel. Maria worked from midday to 5 am. Punters were charged €205 an hour which was split between the Romanian pimp and the brothel owner. Maria was eventually found in a garda raid, returned to Romania and now lives in a shelter far away from her home. A RTE undercover reporter arranged the purchase of a girl to bring to Ireland for €3,500 from a Romanian brothel owner. The film was turned over to Romanian police. Ireland does not have official figures on the number of women trafficked into the Irish sex industry. |

| 08-May06 | Vice squads fight invasion of the Eastern sex slaves | Daily Mail | |
| On May 7th, Gardai revealed that vice detectives are running three investigations into suspected people trafficking gangs as they clamp down on sex slavery. They say that 10 women had been rescued from forced prostitution in Dublin over the last 3 years and urged the public and trafficked victims to provide information about smuggling rings. A 21 year old eastern European female was a victim and a similar case is currently being investigated. Justice Minister Michael McDowell warned that eastern Europe was a main source for traffickers and that it was a growing crime. He said the incidence of trafficking in Ireland was limited but that Ireland faced the same threats as many other countries. As part of an information campaign, posters are to be displayed at ports, airports, train and bus stations, A&E units, hotels and pubs. The poster displays a woman and asks "Sex Slave?" Operation Hotel (begun in Nov. 2005) targets the sex trafficking of eastern European females. Two prosecutions and deportations occurred under the operation and further suspects in the same smuggling ring have been identified. Operation Quest (see articles elsewhere on this site) conducted interviews with several hundred strippers and found one instance of trafficking involving a Bulgarian man who is no longer believed to be in Ireland. |
